Posted April 11, 2006; 06:39 p.m.
The top jazz musicians from two educational institutions -- New
York's Juilliard School and Princeton University -- will join forces
for a big band doubleheader at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the
McCarter Theatre Center.
The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, led by Wycliffe Gordon, performs music
from across the spectrum of jazz styles -- a broad range that includes
originals from band members. Princeton's Concert Jazz Ensemble,
directed by Anthony D.J. Branker, is dedicated to the performance of
the significant works of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and has
been joined in its concerts by such renowned artists as Slide Hampton,
Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Terence Blanchard and Jimmy Heath.
Each group will play its own set and will join forces for a special
encore, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's "Far East Suite."
Tickets are $10, $15 and $20 for the general public and $7.50 for students. They are available online or by calling the McCarter box office at (609) 258-2787.
