Elidor Mehilli, a graduate student in history at Princeton, has received a St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award, which recognizes the top entries in an international essay competition on global issues.
The annual award is given by the International Students' Committee at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Mehilli was one of four winners from more than 1,000 entrants in this year's contest, which carried the theme of "Inspiring Europe." The winners shared the prize of 20,000 euros (approximately $25,000).
Mehilli was honored for his essay, "Europe, the Difficult Dream," which focuses on the European Union and the Balkans. He delivered a talk on his essay at the May 18-20 St. Gallen Symposium, an annual forum for debating issues of global concern.
Mehilli, a native of Tirana, Albania, is focusing on modern European history in his graduate studies at Princeton. His speech and essay are available on the symposium's Web site.
