Two graduate students named Newcombe Fellows

Princeton graduate students Hussein Fancy and Philippa Townsend are among 30 students nationwide to be named 2006 Charlotte Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows.
The fellowships provide $18,500 for students in their final year of work on a dissertation in the humanities or social sciences that addresses questions of religious or ethical value.
Fancy is working on a dissertation for the Department of History titled "Boundary Crossing, Boundary Making: Muslim and Christian Mercenaries in the Western Mediterranean."
Townsend's dissertation topic in the Department of Religion is "The Third Race: Ethnicity, Universalism and Religious Practice in Late Antiquity."
The Newcombe Fellows program, administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, was launched in 1981 and has supported some 1,000 doctoral candidates.
