'Understanding Comics' author to speak, Oct. 5
Posted September 28, 2006; 01:03 p.m.
Scott McCloud, author of the 1993 groundbreaking book "Understanding
Comics," will speak at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Stewart Film
Theater, 185 Nassau St.
McCloud, an artist and scholar of comics, will speak on "Comics: An Art Form in Transition."
The book links the medium of comics to such diverse fields as media
theory, movie criticism and Web design, and is credited with
reinvigorating the art form as a whole.
McCloud's new book, "Making Comics," explores the creation of comics
from the broadest principles to the sharpest details -- such as how to
accentuate a character’s facial muscles in order to form the emotion of
disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.
His talk at Princeton is part of the /@rts lecture series
organized by a number of groups across campus, including the School of
Engineering and Applied Science, the Office of Information Technology,
the Council of the Humanities, the Program in Visual Arts, the
Department of Computer Science, the Department of Music, the University
Center for the Creative and Performing Arts and the University Art
Museum. The series aims to explore interrelations of new media,
technology and traditional forms and practices of the arts and
humanities.
