NY Times columnist Rhoden to speak, Nov. 20

New York Times sports columnist William Rhoden will speak on "The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Black Athlete" at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in 1 Robertson Hall.

Rhoden is the author of "$40 Million Slaves: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Black Athlete," which explores whether current sports stars are being exploited and whether athletes are doing enough to help their own communities. His new book, "Third and a Mile: From Fritz Pollard to Michael Vick -- An Oral History of the Trials, Tears and Triumphs of the Black Quarterback," is due out in January.

Rhoden has been a sports columnist for the Times since 1983 and previously was a columnist for the Baltimore Sun and an editor at Ebony magazine.

The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
