Student musicians to perform, May 4
Posted May 1, 2007; 01:30 p.m.
Two senior music majors, jazz drummer Charles Staab and cellist Daniel Hawkins, will perform original compositions in a concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the University Chapel.
Staab is president of the Princeton University Jazz Ensembles and a singer with the a cappella group Free Form Vocal Collective. He has been awarded a ReachOut 56 Fellowship, which he will use after graduation to work with MIMA Music to bring music instruction to disadvantaged students in after-school programs in Philadelphia.
MIMA Music, a nonprofit organization founded by Princeton alumnus Christoph Geiseler, is sponsoring Staab and Hawkins' concert.
Hawkins has been a member of Musica Alta, the Chapel Choir and the Princeton University Orchestra. His primary interests include mixing music from different cultures, learning to perform with prerecorded sound and exploring extended technique on string instruments. He will spend the year after graduation traveling the country and writing music, supported by the Martin Dale Fellowship.
