Conference focuses on free society, May 14-15

"The Free Society: Foundations and Challenges" is the topic of a conference scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15, in 222 Bowen Hall.

Scholars in the social sciences and humanities from around the country will discuss issues including: the relationship between liberal education and the free society; how to preserve freedom in society under threat of terrorist attack; historical conditions needed for free societies to emerge; and prospects for establishing free institutions in nations that had been subjected to despotic rule.

The conference is sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton and the Association for the Study of Free Institutions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. A schedule of events and roster of speakers can be found on the Madison Program website
