Talk focuses on Pakistan and democracy, Sept. 20

Ayesha Siddiqa, an analyst of Pakistan's military and security affairs, will present a talk titled "Can Pakistan Become a Democracy?" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in 16 Robertson Hall.

Siddiqa, an independent security analyst, has worked on issues such as defense decision-making, nuclear deterrence, arms production and civil-military relations in South Asia. She also was director of naval research with the Pakistan Navy, making her the first civilian and woman to serve in that role.

In addition to being a frequent contributor to international journals, Siddiqa is the author of the new book "Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy," in which she analyzes the Pakistani military's vast commercial interests and their effect on the political and economic development of the country.

The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Institute for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.
