Artist/filmmaker Jaar to speak, Nov. 29

Artist and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar will speak and show his 2005 film "Muxima" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in 10 East Pyne.

The film portrays the evolving history of Angola through alternate interpretations of a single folk song.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Jaar currently lives and works in New York. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985 and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2000.

Jaar's work has been exhibited worldwide, including in Kassel's Documenta and the Venice Biennale. He has had major solo exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Whitechapel in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures, the Department of Art and Archaeology and the Program in Media and Modernity.
