Sports symposium planned, Dec. 7

Sports industry professionals and college athletic leaders will come together for the 2007 Princeton Sports Symposium at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Robertson Hall. The event follows the success of last year's symposium, which was the first sports symposium held at the University in 10 years.

The half-day symposium has been organized by senior Arjun Reddy, sophomore Christina Bortz and Chris Chaney, a 2007 alumnus, with support from the Princeton Varsity Club. Organizers plan to continue the symposium on a biennial basis after this year.

The event is intended to help students and sports professionals learn more about the sports industry, and provide a forum for sports professionals to attract potential future leaders. Panels will address sports management, college athletics, sports media, and sports marketing and sponsorship.

The afternoon will begin with a keynote speech by Brett Yormark, president and chief executive officer of Nets Sports & Entertainment, which owns and operates the New Jersey Nets basketball team. Yormark joined the Nets after working for six years at NASCAR and has been named to the "40 Under 40" lists by Sports Business Journal and Crain's New York Business.

Other industry leaders who will participate in the symposium include: Randy Bernard, chief executive officer of Professional Bull Riders Inc.; Philip de Picciotto, president of athletes and personalities at Octagon; Tola Murphy-Baran, senior vice president of brand management at Sirius Satellite Radio; Leon Rose, basketball division head at Creative Artists Agency Sports; Mike Slive, commissioner of the college athletic Southeastern Conference; Gary Walters, Princeton's director of athletics and a 1967 alumnus; and Chris Weil, chairman and chief executive officer of Momentum Worldwide.

University sponsors of the symposium are the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, Undergraduate Student Government Projects Board, Career Services, Princeton Varsity Club and Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students. Independent symposium sponsors are Archer & Greiner law firm, the National Sports Marketing Network (NSMN) and Odgers Ray & Berndtson sports practice.

The full schedule for the sports symposium is available on the Princeton Varsity Club website.
