Haldane to speak on 'Recognizing Humanity'

Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 4:30 p.m. 219 Burr Hall
"The Need and Implications of Recognizing Humanity" is the title of a lecture to be presented at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in 219 Burr Hall.

John Haldane, professor of philosophy and director of the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs at the University of St. Andrews, will deliver the address, which is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Witherspoon Institute.

He will discuss how mainstream political philosophers need to consider the topic of the fragility of human life more centrally in their work. Drawing upon Martha Nussbaum's "Hiding From Humanity" and other recent books, Haldane will focus on areas such as disabilities, mental disorders and "ending life" issues.
