Listen up, folks. I'm one of the members of this group,
Performers:
and I want to tell you what this show is about.
Performers:
It's about me. It's about me.
Performers:
It's about me. It's about me.
Performers:
It's about me. It's about me.
Performers:
It's about me. It's about me.
Lauren Whitehead:
It's about them.
Lauren Whitehead:
This play chronicles the lives of Langston Hughes and Federico Garcia Lorca.
Lauren Whitehead:
From Andalucia, Spain, to New York's Harlem, we travel through a series of
Lauren Whitehead:
memories, dreams and nightmares all extracted from
Lauren Whitehead:
the poetry, plays, essays, lectures...
Amy Gobel:
Audition for the show?
Jerry Peng:
I didn't audition. Did you?
Amy Gobel:
There's a show?
Amy Gobel:
I just heard there was a party going on.
(music)
Performers:
(singing)
Jerry Peng:
Oh yeah, well we did audition. Right? The Triangle show...
Amy Gobel:
Oh yeah!
Videographer:
Why did you guys audition for "The Beat is Sweet"?
Dave Holtz:
Well, I heard the beat was sweet and... (laughter) I like sweet things.
Dave Holtz:
And I like beats.
Performers:
(singing)
Laura Hankin:
I auditioned because I know Lauren,
Laura Hankin:
and she's been talking about this show for a while,
Laura Hankin:
ever since last year, and it sounded really cool, so I wanted to see what it was like.
Performers:
(singing)
Director:
Five, six, seven, eight.
(music)
Irfan Kherani:
There's a whole bunch of dancing in it. A whole bunch of singing in it.
Irfan Kherani:
It's still very focused on acting and on telling a story.
(music)
Manav Lalwani:
I really wanted to do this before I graduated, so I decided to audition.
Manav Lalwani:
And what drew me to this show in particular is the fact that they
Manav Lalwani:
have so many different dance forms.
(music)
Amy Gobel:
For real this time.
Jerry Peng:
The reason why we auditioned was because of Lauren. Lauren has been a great
Jerry Peng:
director. A great person. A great friend. A great everything.
Jerry Peng:
So, I knew nothing about this play, but I knew Lauren, so that's why I auditioned.
Amy Gobel:
I actually managed to read the fine print. Acting, dancing,
Amy Gobel:
singing, French-language speaking. Not so much Spanish.
Amy Gobel:
I can't do Spanish. But, I was like, wow!
Amy Gobel:
Everything I love in one production. And it's worked out so far.
Lauren Whitehead:
Dive into the writer's mind and
Lauren Whitehead:
follow the pen. The beat is sweet.
Lauren Whitehead:
Are you listening?
Performers:
(singing)
