Tiffany Ko:
As engineers, it's really important that we actually do
Tiffany Ko:
keep the larger picture of "Where is this actually going?"
Nick Frey
I think that's how the world should work, and it really doesn't.
Jane Yang:
My philosophy on life is that
Jane Yang:
service is the rent we pay for living.
Jane Yang:
I think that's something that, it would be great,
Jane Yang:
and it would make the world so much better (laughs) if everyone
Jane Yang:
kind of subscribed to that sort of philosophy.
Nicole Clarke:
Someone gets this part, someone gets this part,
Nicole Clarke:
you guys get to talking and you realize,
Nicole Clarke:
"Oh, we actually can solve this together."
Gordon Franken:
How is all the groundbreaking research that I'm doing apply to
Gordon Franken:
the real world, and how can I make it into a
Gordon Franken:
product that people are going to use and it's going to make the
Gordon Franken:
world a better place to live?

Nick Frey
I know that cycling is a huge part of my life,
Nick Frey
so whenever I learn, I learn through that lens.
Nick Frey
You know, building bikes out of bamboo can solve so many
Nick Frey
different problems on so many different levels.
Nick Frey
It's a way of transportation.
Nick Frey
It is sustainable.
Gordon Franken:
I view robotics as inherently interdisciplinary,
Gordon Franken:
because you can't do robotics without mechanical engineering,
Gordon Franken:
electrical engineering and computer science coming together.
Jane Yang:
Teaching children in grades
Jane Yang:
from third grade up through middle school about engineering,
Jane Yang:
what we're able to do is help them realize that they have so
Jane Yang:
many more career options, especially with female students
Jane Yang:
and especially students whose parents aren't engineers themselves.
Nick Frey
Entrepreneurialism solves other people's problems with a mind
Nick Frey
towards how to make life better.
Tiffany Ko:
A system of checks and balances where it actually forces you to
Tiffany Ko:
really be cognizant of everything that's already out
Tiffany Ko:
there and make sure that you are actually pushing the envelope.
Nick Frey
If everyone was riding a bike, the world would be better.
Gordon Franken:
Robotic vehicles save people's lives.
Gordon Franken:
They save soldiers' lives on the battlefield,
Gordon Franken:
and civilian lives of people who die in car crashes every day.
Nicole Clarke:
I'd just like to think that in
Nicole Clarke:
curing cancer that we also cure cancer for everyone,
Nicole Clarke:
not just, you know, the people who can afford it.
Nick Frey:
Engineering is not just science.
Nick Frey:
I mean, if you do math or physics, that is math or
Nick Frey:
physics. But engineering is not that.
Nick Frey:
It uses those as tools, but then you have to know how
Nick Frey:
it can be applied to the real world.
