Karen Jackson-Weaver:
I'd like to welcome you to our
Karen Jackson-Weaver:
event this morning, Voz Latina, a national symposium on Latinos in America.
Ivan Ortiz:
This morning we got to hear from Mr. Raul Yzaguirre.
Raul Yzaguirre:
The only thing we have that's going to stay around in this
Raul Yzaguirre:
country are human beings.
Raul Yzaguirre:
And we need to invest in that part of the economic formula.
Ivan Ortiz:
I've also attended a faculty-led seminar by Alexandra Vazquez.

Alexandra Vazquez:
This scene might not be anything out of the ordinary,
Alexandra Vazquez:
especially considering Reggaeton's vast spatial and
Alexandra Vazquez:
cultural reach.
Alexandra Vazquez:
These two Salvadorenos offered a dynamic surprise,
Alexandra Vazquez:
even in the smog-choke of 4 o'clock traffic.
Alexandra Vazquez:
They sing along to the rounded "ao"
Alexandra Vazquez:
of the song's lyrical lines.
Alexandra Vazquez:
For example, Ken-Y sings "despertao... disoientao."
Monica Trujillo:
And we've had amazing speakers.
Marta Tienda:
I'm going to talk to you a little bit about diversity and, I call it, its "discontents."
Marta Tienda:
But what if you ignored the SATs?
Marta Tienda:
This is that thing that gives them the jitters in the admissions office.
Marta Tienda:
You wouldn't need affirmative action at all for Hispanics.
Cristina Mora:
What we are doing here today is creating a public space that
Cristina Mora:
provides a warm and opening environment for people to come
Cristina Mora:
and discuss candidly the issues that face Latinos.
Monica Trujillo:
Latinos in the U.S.
Monica Trujillo:
are the second-largest Latino population worldwide,
Monica Trujillo:
second only to Mexico.
Monica Trujillo:
These statistics highlight the importance of our community and
Monica Trujillo:
the need to come together to understand the magnitude of our
Monica Trujillo:
impact on society.
Ivan Ortiz:
There is a strong foundation for this to proceed as an annual event.
Monica Trujillo:
I just hope that this is the beginning of many, many more years to come.
