Former U.N. peacekeeper speaks on conflict resolution

Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, 4:30 p.m. Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall

Romeo Dallaire, who headed the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Rwanda during the genocide in the African nation in 1994, will deliver a lecture titled "Conflict Prevention or Peacekeeping?" at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.

Dallaire, a retired lieutenant-general in the Canadian army and former member of the Canadian Senate, is the author of "Shake Hands With the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda." The account of his service as force commander of the U.N. Assistance Mission for Rwanda has garnered numerous international literary awards and was the subject of a feature film released in 2007.

Since his retirement from the military, Dallaire has worked to bring an understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder to the general public. He also has been a visiting lecturer at several Canadian and American universities, and has written on conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance and human rights.

The event is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, the Fund for Canadian Studies and the University Center for Human Values.
