Former U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union will speak at Princeton, March 7

Jack Matlock, the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1987 to 1991, will present a talk titled "A Cold War Veteran's Look at the Middle East," at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Robertson Hall, Bowl 2 on the Princeton University campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Matlock was a 35-year member of the U.S. Foreign Service specializing in European and Soviet affairs. In November 2009, he was part of a delegation sponsored by the Council for the National Interest that visited Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Palestine and Egypt. During his visit to the Middle East, he met with political leaders, government officials, scholars and journalists to discuss current developments in the region and United States policy.

Following the talk, Matlock's wife, Rebecca Matlock, will present photos taken during the trip to the Middle East at a reception in Robertson Hall.

The events are co-sponsored by Princeton's Davis International Center, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Princeton Middle East Society.
