University named 'Smart Workplace' for emission-reduction efforts

Princeton's Transportation and Parking Services has been selected as a recipient of the N.J. Smart Workplaces award from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the second year in a row.

The annual award honors organizations and individuals who help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by providing commuter benefits to employees, such as free or low-cost bus passes, telecommuting programs, car pool matching and van pool subsidies. The University is one of 450 recipients this year.

In 2008, Transportation and Parking Services launched its Transportation Demand Management program, which aims to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles coming to and parking on campus to help decrease greenhouse gas emission levels. By promoting alternative methods of travel -- including walking, biking, and car and van pools -- and instituting a new vehicle registration program for faculty, staff and students parking on campus, the program aims for the reduction of 500 vehicles on campus by 2020.
