Princeton University fencing team wins first NCAA championship

The Princeton University men's and women's fencing team claimed its first joint National Collegiate Athletic Association title on March 24. Eliza Stone, Class of 2013, won an individual championship in the sabre.

Princeton finished with 182 points in the four-day tournament at San Antonio, Texas. The University of Notre Dame had 175 points, Pennsylvania State University was third with 163 while defending champion Ohio State University came in fourth with 146.

"It's a great feeling," coach Zoltan Dudas said after the tournament. "I'm very proud of the team."

All six Princeton women earned All-America honors and three qualified for the medal round: Eliza Stone; her sister and sabreist Gracie Stone, Class of 2016; and epeeist Susannah Scanlan, Class of 2014.

Eliza Stone is the second Princeton woman to win an NCAA individual fencing title. Foilist Eva Petschnigg won in 2000.

The NCAA switched to a joint fencing championship in 1990.

Along with the field hockey championship in the fall, the fencing championship gives Princeton two team titles in an academic year for the first time since 1994, when both lacrosse teams were NCAA champions. Princeton and the University of Oregon are the only two schools to have won more than one NCAA team championship this academic year.
