UPDATE: Search ends after canopy at old Dinky station topples

The canopy at the former Princeton NJ TRANSIT train station tipped over into the track bed at about 4:25 p.m. Thursday afternoon. No one was hurt.

The 200-foot-long canopy section covered the platform area of the old station, which has been fenced off due to construction related to development of the Arts and Transit project.

Among several agencies responding were the Princeton Fire Department, Princeton Police Department, the University's Department of Public Safety, and Princeton First Aid and Rescue (PFARS) in addition to a Mercer County task force that investigates structure collapses.

The area of Alexander Street and University Place was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic for a few hours while crews searched to make sure all construction workers were accounted for. The search concluded about 8:15 p.m.

Trains continued to run without interruption to the new, temporary Princeton station, which opened last month. A permanent station will be built as part of the Arts and Transit project and is expected to open in the fall next year.
