Fall 2014 Student Activities and Civic Engagement Fairs

Student groups focusing on community service and fun were on display at the Fall 2014 Student Activities and Civic Engagement Fairs on Friday, Sept. 12, inside and outside Dillon Gym. The event was sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students and the Pace Center for Civic Engagement.

Members of Princeton's Class of 2018 wrapped up Opening Exercises in the University Chapel and then marched through FitzRandolph Gate on the front campus Sunday, Sept. 7, to start officially their freshman year. Seniors, juniors and sophomores along with alumni and friends and family lined the walkways before Nassau Hall as the Pre-rade passed by.

New program makes ‘Service Focus’ central to Princeton student experience .

Service Focus will bring undergraduates together to explore the meaning of service and its place in their lives during an intensive yearlong experience.

As part of the seven Breakout trips over fall break, 13 undergraduates participated in the trip "Hipsters and High-rises: The Socioeconomic Effects of Gentrification in New York City," to take a close look at the intersections of art, urban design, gentrification and community preservation in New York.

Thirty middle school students went back to school this fall enthused about science and technology after spending the summer at Princeton University's Community House STEM Summer Camp. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama visited Princeton University on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Among the day's activities were a public talk on compassion, a conversation with students about service, and destruction of sand mandalas symbolizing the impermanence of life.

Princeton faculty, staff and students take part in King Day of Service .

About 30 Princeton University volunteers honored Dr. King's legacy on Thursday, Jan. 15, by lending a hand at Princeton Nursery School in Princeton, Little Cherubs Head Start in Hamilton, Mercer Street Friends Food Bank in Ewing and the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie in Trenton, as part of Princeton University's second annual Day of Service.

Freshmen get lessons in civic engagement .

After growing up in an affluent neighborhood, Wendy Kopp arrived at Princeton unaware of the deficient schooling some of her peers had overcome to attend the University. By the time she graduated in 1989, however, Kopp was aware of these inequalities — and determined to reverse them. At age 21, she launched Teach for America to train teachers to work in low-income communities. Kopp and four Princeton seniors recently addressed members of the class of 2011 on the many ways they could serve society — through student groups or through academic work; locally, nationally or internationally.
