RESEARCH HONOR: Islam and Maya named Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows

Princeton doctoral candidates Sarah Islam and Gustavo Maya are among the 21 scholars who have been named 2017 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The Newcombe Fellowship is the nation's largest and most prestigious award for Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences addressing questions of ethical and religious values. Islam is completing her dissertation, "Blasphemy as a Legal Category in Early and Medieval Islamic History" in the Department of Near Eastern Studies. Maya is completing his dissertation, "The Work of the People: Religion, Politics and the Farmworker Movement," which is an ethical analysis of the farmworker movement with attention to its religious influences — in the Department of Religion. Each fellow receives a 12-month award of $25,000 to support their final year of dissertation work.

Princeton University recognized the winners of the highest honors it awards to students at Alumni Day ceremonies Saturday, Feb. 25. Seniors Jeremy Golubcow-Teglasi and James Williams shared the University's Moses Taylor Pyne Honor Prize, and graduate students Liang Feng, Guy Geltner, Gerard Passannante and David Shih were honored as co-winners of the Porter Ogden Jacobus Fellowship.  

Jacobus Fellow Cole Bunzel's dissertation explores history of Wahhābism in Saudi Arabia .

Twelve Princeton faculty elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Princeton faculty members Rubén Gallo, M. Zahid Hasan, Amaney Jamal, Ruby Lee, Margaret Martonosi, Tom Muir, Eve Ostriker, Alexander Smits, Leeat Yariv, James Stone and Muhammad Qasim Zaman have been named members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Visiting faculty member Alondra Nelson also was elected to the academy.
