How do I search your collections? There are several ways to search for materials at the Mudd Manuscript Library. Finding Aids: Finding aids provide an overview of the collection and frequently contain a box listing or inventory. With this information, patrons can identify materials of interest. [Note: All collections have finding aids available online, but not all finding aids include inventories. If you are interested in one of these collections, please contact the Mudd Library.] Researchers may also conduct a search across all finding aids. For additional information on searching and for further help with finding aids, click here. Databases: There are several online databases. Most are designed to provide item level information. For example, we have a senior thesis database, a historical photograph database, and an undergraduate alumni database. Library Catalog: Patrons can also search the Princeton University library catalog for information on both secondary sources and manuscript collections. Entries for our collections are linked to the online finding aid. Frequently Asked Questions: The Mudd Library has expanded its list of frequently asked questions to cover a variety of topics. Many of these include links to databases, finding aids, and other online resources.
You are researching the life of Adlai Stevenson and want to know if there is any correspondence between him and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Begin your search by clicking on the Collections and Finding Aids tab, and then select EAD Finding Aids. This will direct you to a list of finding aids. Select Browse Public Policy Papers finding aids. From the A-Z list, choose “S,” and then scroll down to the Stevenson, Adlai E., Papers. A review of the finding aid, particularly the Arrangement section, will lead you to a description of the correspondence series, as well as to the folder listing for that section. Scrolling down through the folders, you will see that Box 73 : Folder 8-11 and Box 74 : Folder 1-2 contains correspondence with Schlesinger, Jr. [Note: Due to the large size of many archival collections, finding aids do not provide item level inventories.] For additional help on navigating finding aids please visit the help page of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections Finding Aids web site.
