Premieres by George Crumb, Paul Lansky, and more
On April 23, the group, 'Crazy Jane', led by guitarist, David Starobin, with his distinguished colleagues, Patrick Mason, baritone, and Daniel Druckman, percussion will perform at Symphony Space, 7:30PM. Preceding the concert will be a discussion with George Crumb, Paul Lansky, William Bland, Akemi Naito, David Leisner and Symphony Space Associate Artistic Director Laura Kaminsky on the Underscore series at 6:30 pm.
Works include the New York premiere of George Crumb's , "The Ghosts of Alhambra" for baritone, guitar and percussion. A work in 7 movements, "The Ghosts of Alhambra" is a cycle of seven poems drawn from Federico Garcia Lorca's "Poema del Cante Jondo" ("Poem of the Deep Song"). Completed in 2008 for 'Crazy Jane', the cycle marks a return to Crumb's extensive involvement with the poetry of Garcia Lorca, after a 22-year hiatus. Also included are New York and World premieres of Akemi Naito's "The Idea of Order at Key West", Paul Lansky's "Songs of Parting" and five excerpts from William Bland's "48 Preludes", along with the second NY performance of David Leisner's "Three James Tate Songs."
