MUS 321 THE IMPROVISING ENSEMBLE
On April 29 the Program in Jazz Studies presents a concert featuring students in Music 321: The Improvising Ensemble led by Dr. Anthony D.J. Branker, along with special guest The Respect Sextet (http://www.respectsextet.com), an acclaimed professional group which includes trumpet player and Princeton alumnus, Eli Asher '00.
Music 321: The Improvising Ensemble seeks to provide a process-oriented classroom experience in music performance aimed at providing instrumental and vocal students with opportunities to reimagine the process of creative music-making through the use of improvisational concepts and activities in group collaboration. Throughout the semester, students examine and re-examine the meaning of music, create outside of their musical comfort zones, and develop improvisational group compositions that have been influenced by sound, gestures, rhythm, poetry/spoken word, and visual arts, to name several starting off points. Members of the course include students with significant performance experience in areas of classical, jazz, popular, or world music. Eli Asher and the Sextet will be working with students on the art of improvisation in the class in addition to performing with them in concert.
