Music theorist in residence for the Dutch-Flemish Music Theory Society (2008-09). Recipient of Guggenheim Fellowship (1990), Dent Medal from the Royal Musical Association (1992), Young Scholar Award from the Society for Music Theory (1994), Harrison Medal from the Society for Musicology in Ireland (2009), Eva Judd O’Meara Award from the Music Library Association (2011) and the Howard T. Behrman Award from Princeton University (2011). Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences; Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.
