The Committee on the Course of Study
The Committee on the Course of Study has primary responsibility for reviewing and recommending to the faculty changes in the undergraduate curriculum and in the educational policies governing the undergraduate program.
The committee is chaired by Valerie Smith, Dean of the College; Deputy Dean Clayton Marsh serves as secretary. The committee membership consists of nine faculty members, elected by the faculty, and representatives of the Academics Committee of the Undergraduate Student Government. The elected faculty members serve three-year terms.
All proposals to add courses to the permanent curriculum, delete courses from the permanent curriculum, or make substantive changes to existing courses are reviewed by the committee. Proposals which receive positive committee recommendations are presented to the full faculty for a vote at the monthly meetings of the faculty. Proposals for one-time-only and topics courses are reviewed by Dean Smith and Dean Marsh, acting on behalf of the committee. Departments are welcome to discuss preliminary proposals with us in advance of formal submission to the committee.
