International Opportunities

Students are encouraged to explore the many opportunities to study and work overseas through the Study Abroad Program, International Internship Program, and International Service Initiatives. Other opportunities abroad are available through various fellowships.

Study Abroad
Seeing yourself and your world through an unfamiliar lens can have a significant impact on your studies, deepen your understanding of yourself, and challenge your assumptions about the world. Having learned to adjust to another culture and educational system, students return from study abroad with a new level of confidence and a better sense of what they want to accomplish as undergraduates and beyond. In today's globalized world, it is critical that students learn to appreciate and function in different cultures and contexts

The Study Abroad Program allows you to receive Princeton credit while spending either one semester or an academic year abroad. The program is open to spring-semester sophomores, all juniors, and fall-semester seniors. Applications to non-English-speaking countries are especially encouraged.

To qualify for the Study Abroad Program, you should have at least a B average for the fall/spring of the academic year preceding the semester or year you wish to spend abroad. Successful completion of a Princeton language course at the 107/108 level or its equivalent is, in most cases, the minimum prerequisite for study in a country or program where a foreign language taught at Princeton is used. (See the Study Abroad Program for a list of approved programs and complete information.) Prior to going abroad, most students complete at least one 200- or 300-level language course to attain greater fluency.

Many students submit applications to their study abroad program at the beginning of the semester preceding the one they plan to study abroad. They apply in late February/early March for the next fall, or in September for the following spring. Early applications are always advised, as many programs admit students on a rolling basis. The Study Abroad Program provides guidance and detailed information regarding the application process, deadlines, requirements, arrangements made in different departments to accommodate and encourage study abroad, and a listing of the study abroad programs recently undertaken by students in particular majors. Students are encouraged to discuss their interest in study abroad and international internships with their academic advisers and departmental representatives. Department websites often include current information on funding and applications for international opportunities related to their particular region or academic discipline.  See the Study Abroad Program for more detailed information, guidance, and resources related to study abroad.
