Field Study

The Field Study Program allows approximately five students per term either to work full time or conduct full-time research in areas closely related to their academic interests. Field study substitutes for one term at Princeton. Students in the program hold responsible positions in a government agency or private firm or organization. The academic component of a field study proposal is as important as the job assignment itself.

Whom do I see about the Field Study Program?
Please make an appointment to see Dean Peter Quimby by calling 8-3040. Applications are available in his office, and he will be happy to talk to you as you begin to formulate your proposal.

What do I need to do to put together a proposal for the Field Study Program?
You will develop your proposal in consultation with Dean Quimby, with the departmental representative in your concentration, and with the faculty member who agrees to serve as your academic adviser for the field experience. You must secure the position, which may be salaried or non-paying, and develop a course of study and a set of assignments or projects to supplement your work experience. Those papers or projects will analyze your experience and demonstrate your mastery of the relevant literature.

Admission to the program is granted by the Committee on Examinations and Standing. Applications are due by May 15 for fall term proposals and by Dec. 1 for spring term proposals.

How is the Field Study Program recorded on my transcript?
The program appears as "Field Study" in the appropriate term. The Field Study experience is ungraded.
