FERPA
This area of our website is being developed to provide general educational information about a key federal statute affecting student records. The Office of the General Counsel also offers training sessions on FERPA each academic year. For this year's sessions, check the News & Announcements on the Office of Information Technology website.
The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 ("FERPA") , sometimes known as the Buckeley Amendment, is designed to 1) ensure students have a right of access to their educational records and 2) protect those records from disclosure to third parties.
Note: In December 2008, the Department of Education revised its regulations implementing FERPA. More information on those regulations can be found on The Catholic University of America, The Office of General Counsel website.
