Biography

Robert Berness joined the Office of the General Counsel in 2007. He provides advice in various areas including development and charitable giving, not-for-profit law, tax, finance and treasury, endowment, investments, related organizations, and governance. Mr. Berness also supervises litigation arising in these substantive practice areas, and provides advice and counsel on related regulatory and compliance concerns. He is actively involved in the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and previously served on NACUA’s Committee on Finance and Audit. Prior to becoming University Counsel at Princeton, Mr. Berness was an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Rutgers School of Law, where he was Research Editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif, and his B.A., summa cum laude, from Rutgers College.
