For Students
Princeton University does not provide legal services to its students. However, Rights, Rules, Responsibilities notes that the University has a practice of maintaining in various offices a list of names of a few local attorneys for referral, in the event the engagement of an attorney is desired for any reason. Please call the main line of the Office of the General Counsel for more information: 609-258-2500.
Typically, an attorney is willing to provide a limited amount of “free” consultation in order to assess a potential client's needs and enable the person to, in turn, evaluate the appropriateness of the attorney for the contemplated engagement. However, it is the student's obligation to confirm this understanding with any attorney contacted as a result of the attorney’s appearance on the list. As underscored in Rights, Rules, Responsibilities, financial arrangements pertaining to counsel engagement are made between the student and the attorney, with the cost of legal counsel being the full responsibility of the student and his or her family.
No one should presume that the University vouches for the competency or appropriateness of any of these attorneys for specific representation or counseling, encourages engagement of any of these attorneys to the exclusion of attorneys not on this list, endorses the engagement of one listed attorney over another, or believes that these attorneys are more appropriate than others to provide legal representation to our students. This contact information is offered only as a service to our students.
P-2-P file sharing issues have become of interest, legally, to students on campuses across the country, including Princeton's. In addition, September 11 and subsequent events raised concerns among segments of our student body pertaining to the possibility of future approaches by law investigators, related to anti-terrorism efforts. As a result, the list identifies attorneys who have expressed a willingness to be available to provide advice and/or representation in such contexts.
