About IIP

About the International Internship Program

The International Internship Program (IIP) offers summer internships to first-years, sophomores, and juniors. IIP offers opportunities in over 50 countries across various regions and in a wide range of industries including business and consulting, public policy, education, health, community engagement, and research-based internships in all academic fields. Students accepted to an IIP receive a financial award to help cover expected costs of living in their host country. Students participating in an IIP must commit to their program for eight consecutive weeks.

Why apply for an IIP?

Select from a wide range of responsibilities

  • IIP offers internships in a variety of interest areas. Students will have the opportunity to take on a range of responsibilities – from lab research and fieldwork to community engagement and advocacy, business consulting and finance, engineering and computer science, journalism, arts culture and architecture, as well as communications and marketing.
  • Fulfill your academic, professional and personal goals
  • Most IIP students have incorporated their IIP research into their junior paper and senior thesis. Students should check with their academic department to see if an internship will be required as part of their minor or certificate.
  • Living abroad allows the student to explore a new culture, enhance their language skills and accomplish personal goals.

Expand your network

  • IIP interns make lasting connections with their supervisors, colleagues, and community members abroad. Students continue to use these connections to expand their network in their professional industry.

Type of IIP

IIPs can be hosted by either a direct employer, or a third-party provider.

  • Direct employers are partnerships with organizations that happen directly through IIP and are a little more independent in nature.
  • Third-party providers are internships offered through a placement agency that connect you with employers within their network and offer additional programming to acclimate you to the work space, culture, or language abroad. To learn more about the providers, visit the GPS brochure Provider Information tab.
