The Laboratory of Structural Biology was founded in 2002 as a joint laboratory of the Institute of Systems Biology and Ecology of the Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Physical Biology of the University of South Bohemia named Laboratory of High Performance Computing. Continuously growing, the laboratory today combines methods ranging from computational and spectroscopic to molecular biological and biochemical--and, in collaboration with the Kuta Smatanova, lab protein crystallisation. With its focus on molecular systems biology, the relationship between structure and function of proteins, dynamic changes related to functional processes on the level of proteins and the mutual interaction of cofactors and subunits in protein complexes, the laboratory is an integral part of the new research concept of the Institute. The intern selected for this placement will make a significant contribution to this research effort. The laboratory has highly ambitious aims with regard to the development of new methods in molecular systems biology and its application to systems of a common interest, hot topic systems. Intern projects in the past have included direct work on simulations, replicating mutations and scientific lab experiments, and research. The project in 2010 will focus on modeling interactions in and between biomolecules and complex biologically relevant systems. During the project interns will be introduced to the computational methods for the building and investigation of biological systems and will be able to analyze dynamical changes in systems and learn how to interpret generated data. Interns will use special software for modeling biological systems and carrying out molecular dynamics simulations.

Experience in the basic lab techniques of biochemistry/molecular biology, such as the use of pipettes, electrophoresis, preparation of buffers etc., would be an asset.
Karolinska Institute, Clinical Microbiology, Department of Microbiology, Tumor, and Cell Biology
Research Project: molecular genetics of uropathogenesis. Location: Stockholm, Sweden. Research at MTC is performed in the following areas: Biomedical Ecology, Cell Biology, Clinical Microbiology, Immunobiology, Infectious Disease Control, Tumor Biology, and Infection Biology. The latter area includes the subtopics Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Virology. The Karolinska Institute is one of Europe's largest medical universities. It is also Sweden's largest center for medical training and research. Its mission is to improve the health of mankind through research and education. Specifically, this research group works on questions concerning the host–pathogen interaction at epithelia in the urinary tract, with special emphasis on antimicrobial peptides. It also investigates components of E. coli, the most common uropathogen, which are involved in adhesion, invasion, and biofilm formation, and their impact on pathogenesis in the urinary tract. Techniques applied in the lab include techniques of general microbiology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, immunological assays, microscopy, cell culture/cell infection models, and animal infection models. If the duration of the internship allows, the intern will preferably work on his or her own project as part of the group's ongoing research project. Interns should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This internship is ideal for students with backgrounds and interests in the life sciences, medicine, and infection biology.
