Applying to Study Abroad
Applying to study abroad is a two-step process:
- Apply to the specific university or program abroad that you would like to attend.
- Complete the Study Abroad Approval Process (deadline of May 1 for fall semester and full year programs and November 1 for spring semester programs)
Students on financial aid must also read Financial Aid Information for Study Abroad (.pdf) and submit a Budget for Study Abroad (.pdf) to the Undergraduate Financial Aid Office.
Applications for many study abroad programs, including all Princeton-affiliated programs, are available in the Office of International Programs or on program websites. In some cases, you may need to request an application.
Check deadlines! Application deadlines for fall and full year programs can be as early as December and as late as the end of April. Deadlines for most spring semester programs range from early October to early November, but you should check application deadlines early in your search. Qualified applicants are usually admitted to programs and universities on a rolling admissions basis, so applying early (well before the published deadlines) makes sense. Whether applying directly to a university abroad or to a program, you should leave ample time for the application process. Note that a number of institutions (including the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge) have very early deadlines.
Once you have accepted a program's or a university's offer of admission, you will usually have to pay a nonrefundable deposit. You should also notify other programs that have admitted you that you will not be accepting their offer.
