Location: Shanghai

Language of instruction: Chinese and English
Courses: Chinese language plus courses in Chinese society and culture, economics, international relations, and political science taught in English
Housing: apartment adjacent to campus shared with a Chinese student

Other information: Classes are offered exclusively for Alliance students. Chinese language classes average 6-8 students per class. Area studies courses in English typically range from 6-15 students per class.

CIEE Study Center in Beijing, Intensive Chinese Language Program or Advanced Chinese Studies, hosted by Peking University
Location: Beijing
Dates: early September to mid-December for fall; after Lunar New Year (early February) to late May for spring
Language of instruction: English and Chinese (Mandarin)
Courses: Asian studies, Chinese language and literature, Chinese studies/Chinese culture, history, international relations

Other information: evaluation on file. Students who pass the PKU language test will be asked to join the direct enrollment CIEE Advanced Chinese Studies program, which runs on the Peking University academic calendar (extending approximately one month beyond the listed program dates). There are also different fees associated with the program. Note: PKU will not accept students who are citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau—including U.S. permanent residents.
Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (affiliated with Princeton)
Location: Beijing
Dates: early September to mid-June for full year; semester option available if space permits
Language of instruction: Chinese. All students sign a pledge to speak only Chinese on the program's premises.

Housing: single rooms in the foreign student dormitory
Application deadlines: January 11 for fall, spring, and year
Other information: As this program usually lasts one full year and offers only Chinese language, Princeton students should plan to participate in it as part of the Five-Year Program offered by the Program in East Asian Studies. Scholarship aid is available from IUP and East Asian Studies. Princeton is part of the inter-university consortium.
Middlebury School Abroad in China, in conjunction with CET Academic Programs
Location: Hangzhou, Beijing, and Kunming
Date(s): late August to mid-December for fall; mid-February to early June for spring.
Language of instruction: Chinese. Students are expected to maintain the spirit of the Middlebury College Language Pledge and to speak only Chinese while in China.
Courses: one-on-one content-based tutorial, one-on-two speech and pronunciation class plus two elective courses
Housing: double-occupancy dormitory room with Chinese student
Application deadline(s): October 1 for spring; March 15 for fall/year
Other information: Curriculum is designed for high intermediate and advanced Chinese language students. Completion of a minimum of four semesters of college-level Chinese is required; five semesters or two years plus a summer are strongly preferred. All students are expected to enroll in a Chinese course the semester preceding the term or year abroad.
