Princeton Program: University of Queensland
The UQ Union is the hub of student life at UQ. As a student of UQ you are automatically a member of the Union and it's free. UQ Union provides funding for a wide range of (more than 120) clubs and societies and offers extensive services including legal advice, education, advocacy, welfare rights support, employment, queer rights, environmental initiatives, women's rights and indigenous student support.
St. Lucia campus recreation facilities include the UQ Aquatic Centre, Athletics Centre, Sport & Fitness Centre and Tennis Centre. Students are also encouraged to compete in your favorite sport in a social atmosphere with UQ Sport's variety of social sport competitions.
Students at the St. Lucia campus can choose from on-campus residential colleges, off-campus student housing, and rental housing and units.
Residential colleges usually provide single rooms, meals, laundry facilities, and common social spaces. The colleges are a close-knit community, and students who live in the colleges are expected to participate and contribute to the life of the college. Because there is high demand for spaces in the residential colleges, students should apply as early as possible. For information on the application process, visit http://www.uq.edu.au/student-services/campus-residential-colleges.
Off-campus student housing is designed for students but is not a facility that belongs to UQ. Some function like residential colleges; others are more like houses or apartment units, but they are run by private concerns.
Shared rental houses and apartments are the most common form of student housing, allowing students to save on costs and develop friendships with housemates. Houses are usually shared by three or more students with weekly rent ranging from about AUD $80 to AUD$130 per person. Apartments are usually smaller and shared by fewer people and range from AUD$100 to AUD$150. Students interested in rental housing should either arrive early to look for housing in Brisbane or book accommodations through a provider prior to arrival. For a list of providers and other information about housing, please see the accomodations website.
UQ provides temporary accommodation while students hunt for apartments.
