Increasing the awareness of the importance of Data Privacy

Do you know the importance of protecting personal identities and the effects social media can have on privacy?

On January 28, the United States and many other countries around the world will celebrate Data Privacy Day, a day set aside to raise the awareness of the importance of protecting personal identities and the effects social media can have on privacy – our own and of others. Data Privacy Day promotes awareness about the many ways personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared, and education about privacy practices that will help individuals protect their personal information.

The article “EDUCAUSE and the higher education community celebrate Data Privacy Month this January,” published on the National Cyber Security Alliance website, StaySafeOnline.org, highlights the events and support materials being offered in honor of Data Privacy Day. Among the offerings are free webinars and a free download of the book “lol… OMG! - What every student needs to know about online reputation management, digital citizenship and cyberbullying,” from January 27 through January 30.

The StaySafeOnline.org website, is a website dedicated to providing educational resources to help individuals stay safe online.  Quick tips on how college students can keep their information safe can be found on this site at Internet Safety and Security for College Students.
