Welcome, Class of 2013

We can help you find opportunities to participate in break trips that combine service and learning, volunteer in the community, take part in public discussions of political concerns, work for government and nonprofit agencies through summer public service internships, and do academic work related to civic issues—and these are just a few examples of the wide variety of activities we support and encourage.

» Breakout Princeton Fall Break Trips
Information sessions: Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 PM and Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 PM
Women's Center conference room, Frist 200 level.
Participant applications due on Oct. 1 for student-led trips that combine service and learning about issues such as education, the environment, and prison reform.

» Community House Volunteer Orientation
Wednesday, Sept. 23, 6-9 PM
Carl A. Fields Center, 58 Prospect St.
Community House will partner with the Program in Teacher Preparation and the Princeton Regional Schools to provide valuable training for mentoring adolescents and being an effective tutor. Dinner will be provided. RSVP: 258-6136 or house@princeton.edu

» KaBOOM! Playground Build
Saturday, Sept. 26, 8:30 AM-2:30 PM
Princeton YMCA-YWCA Field, Paul Robeson Place
To celebrate Community House's 40th anniversary, the organization is joining forces with the Princeton YM and YWCA to build a playground for children in the Princeton community. Shifts are available from 8:30-11:30 AM (meet in front of Nassau Hall at 8 AM) or 11:30 AM-2:30 PM (meet in front of Nassau Hall at 11 AM). Breakfast and lunch will be provided. RSVP: 258-6136 or house@princeton.edu; include how many volunteers will be coming and what shift they will work.

Opportunities of interest to incoming freshmen

» Community House
Community House is a community service organization committed to closing the minority achievement gap in Princeton by providing programs that bolster early childhood literacy, promote the mastery of fundamental academic skills, and create early awareness of post-secondary opportunities for underserved minority youth. Undergraduate student volunteers tutor and mentor preschool, middle, and high school students on and off campus. Open House: Saturday, Sept. 19, 1-3 PM at the Carl A. Fields Center, 58 Prospect St. Volunteer Orientation: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 6-9 PM at the Carl A. Fields Center. Dinner will be provided.

» Student Volunteers Council (SVC)
The Student Volunteers Council (SVC) is a student-led organization that sponsors more than 40 weekly volunteer projects including tutoring, restoring houses, organizing blood drives, serving food at soup kitchens, and visiting the elderly. SVC also sponsors events and activities to raise awareness and understanding of public issues related to service activities. Open House: Tuesday, Sept. 22, 4:30–6:30 PM, Firestone Plaza (In case of rain: Frist 100 level).

» Breakout Princeton
Breakout trips combine service and learning with opportunities to see and experience new places. Information about these trips and how to apply for them will be announced soon. Applications will be accepted starting Sept. 17 and are due by Oct. 1. Information session: Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 PM and Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 PM, both in the Women's Center conference room on the Frist 200 level.

» Summer public service internships
The Pace Center has summer public service internships designed for Princeton students. Hear last summer's interns present their experiences on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Sept. 29 and 30 and Oct. 1, from 7 to 9 PM in Rocky 302, and watch the Pace Center website for information about next year's opportunities.
