Condensed Matter Seminar - Tarun Grover, KITP UCSB - Highly Entangled Quantum Matter
Abstract: Strong correlations can lead to new phases of quantum matter with striking features, such as emergent fermions and photons in a system composed only of bosons, or even excitations that are neither bosons nor fermions ("anyons"). In this talk, I will illustrate the unique view provided by many-body quantum entanglement on such intriguing phases. In particular, I will show that the quantum entanglement can be used to extract the universal properties associated with anyons, including their braiding statistics. I will also explain how one may exploit recently discovered constraints on the renormalization group flows, such as entanglement monotonicity, to determine the stability of phases which are described by interacting gauge theories in three space-time dimensions.
