How to password protect a directory (and all files therein) on my website on Feynman?
Here are the steps:
1. run the following command on Feynman to set the username and password you want
- htdigest -c ~/.htdigest "info" username
Replace "info" with a brief description of the protected space (e.g, "My secrets"). Don't forget the quotes around it!!
username is the user that is allowed to access the website.
This command will ask you for the password you want to set for the webpages.
2. After setting the username and password, send the path-to-the-directory you want to protect, in an online help ticket. You will get an email response when the password protection has been turned on in the webserver.
3. To further secure the access to your website, please publish your website address with a leading https:// (instead of http://) e.g., https://physics.princeton.edu/it this will ask you to accept a security certificate, which you should. After that, all traffic to and from your website will be encrypted, in addition to being password protected. (If the certificate complains about a domain name mismatch, please ignore it)
