Travel Information

Students are responsible for arranging their own international flight to arrive at either Narita International Airport (NRT) http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/ or Haneda Airport/Tokyo International Airport (HND) http://www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/en/  on Saturday, June 9, 2012, and depart on Saturday, July 21, 2012.  Which airport you use is totally up to you—use whichever one works better for you in terms of ticket price/schedule.

When planning flights, students should be sure to consult the University Business Travel Portal, particularly “International Consolidators” under “Flights” on the main menu for low fares on major airlines.

Information on ground transportation will be provided by the seminar administrator, Rebecca Aguas.

Before departing, students must register online via the University Travel Database. Details on this process will be provided by the seminar administrator. The site also provides other valuable information on international travel and on university resources that will make the trip easier.

Passports and Visas

A passport, valid for 6 months after departure from Tokyo, is required. To apply for or renew a passport, please consult: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.
Students may also apply for a passport through the post office in Princeton’s Palmer Square.

A visa is not required for U.S. citizens to enter Japan. Information regarding visas for non-U.S. citizens will be available from the seminar administrator.

Immunizations

McCosh Health Center will contact each student directly about required and suggested immunizations. A mandatory predeparture meeting with a health representative from McCosh will be held in April or May.

Housing and Meals

In Tokyo for the first two weeks, students will share double-rooms at a Japanese business-style hotel with all amenities including internet. They will share triple-rooms at a traditional Japanese-style hotel for the last three weeks of the seminar, following the one-week-long excursion to Sendai and Kamaishi. Both Tokyo hotels are located in the Hongo district in close proximity to public transportation and the University of Tokyo.

A welcome dinner and a farewell dinner are planned for the group. Breakfast is included at the hotels in Tokyo, but all other meals will be at the student’s expense. Students are welcome to use the University’s campus dining facilities, which offer reduced-priced meals.
