Claudio Lomnitz on "The Criminalization of Mexican Political Society During the Porfiriato"
This lecture is a study of a media event-- Arnulfo Arroyo’s attempt on the person of Porfirio Díaz, on September 16, 1897. It will discuss how the modernization of journalism, and its subtle connections to the Díaz dictatorship, came together in such a way that it inflected and infected the whole of Mexican political society, by way of the generalization of a ‘hermeneutics of suspicion.
