María del Carmen de Lara has directed and produced more than 40 documentaries and feature films. She also founded, with Leopoldo Best, the production company Calacas y Palomas in 1990. She received notoriety as a documentarian for "No les pedimos un viaje a la luna", about the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. The themes of her work reflect a number of current affairs facing Mexican society, most notably the importance of the vision of gender, the change of sexual behavior, and the violation of the rights of reproduction.
