Specialization: Comparative politics; Latin American politics; international relations

Will Barndt's research focuses on political and social inequality in Latin America. His dissertation, Executive Assaults: Presidents and Political Liberty in South America, analyzes attempts by elected presidents to suspend the basic political liberties of particular individuals and groups at particular moments. Most importantly, it demonstrates that these "executive assaults" are only overcome when business elites invest in anti-assault coalitions. This stark conclusion has important and disturbing implications for current theories of democratic politics in the region. He is currently a graduate fellow of the Fellowship of Woodrow Wilson Scholars. Previously, he has been a visiting research affiliate of the Center for Development Studies (CENDES) of the Universidad Central de Venezuela and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. His research in Andean countries has been funded by both the MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
