Professor Philip Pettit is a philosopher by discipline, and often collaborates with scholars from other fields. His interests range throughout political theory, social theory, and foundational issues in philosophy. The books that he authored prior to joining Princeton University include A Theory of Freedom: From the Psychology to the Politics of Agency, Republicanism: A Theory of Freedom and Government, Three Methods of Ethics (with M. Baron & M. Slote), The Common Mind: An Essay on Psychology, Society, and Politics, and Not Just Deserts: A Republican Theory of Criminal Justice (with John Braithwaite).

Professor Pettit was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009 and holds honorary degrees from the National University of Ireland; the University of Crete, Queen's University, Belfast; Lund University; and l'Universite de Montreal.
