Awarding of Advanced DegreesDoctor of Philosophy DegreeThe Students Obligations. In order to be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), the student, after fulfilling the requirements stated in the Graduate School Announcement, must: 1. Pay the degree fee. The check, payable to Princeton University, should be given to the secretary of the departmental director of graduate study. Students who have fellowships with provisions for paying the degree fee should apply to the academic deans office. 2. Complete and return the degree application form obtained from the secretary of the director of graduate study. 3. Complete the procedure for terminating enrollment form if you are currently enrolled. All of the above must be submitted to the secretary of the director of graduate study of your department for transmittal to the Graduate School office before the final public oral examination is authorized. The Departments Obligations. The department must submit to the dean of the Graduate School, 205 Nassau Hall, the following: 1. One copy of the Ph.D. dissertation report and the request to hold the final publication oral examination form at least two weeks before the date of the oral examination. 2. Two dissertation readers reports. 3. One copy of the dissertation abstract. 4. The check, the degree application form, and the procedure for terminating enrollment form submitted by the student. The department must also, as certified by the Ph.D. dissertation report and the request to hold final public oral examination form, transmit to the Mudd Library two bound copies of the dissertation immediately upon completion of the final public oral examination. Unless this is done, the degree is not awarded. Dissertations should never be sent through campus mail -- they should be hand delivered. On request, someone from Mudd Library (8-3242) can pick them up. Master's DegreeThe Students Obligations. In order to be awarded a masters degree, after fulfilling the requirements stated in the Graduate School Announcement, a student must submit the following to the secretary of the departmental director of graduate study in his or her department for transmittal to the Graduate School office: 1. The degree fee, with the check made payable to Princeton University. 2. The degree application form obtained from the departmental office. 3. The procedure for terminating enrollment form, if it is a terminal degree and you are currently enrolled. The Departments Obligations. The department must submit to the Graduate School office the terminal master degree recommendation form and readers reports (where appropriate) along with the items listed above from the student. Joint and Multiple DegreesThe Graduate School offers no joint degrees. Just as an applicant to the Graduate School can apply to only one department, so an enrolled student can be a candidate for only one higher degree at a time. The Graduate School makes no regular provision for multiple, concurrent degree candidacy, neither Ph.D. nor masters. Library Privileges for Unenrolled StudentsUnenrolled continuing degree candidates who have completed their regular course of study (four or five years of enrollment) may enjoy full borrowing privileges at no cost for an additional year or more if they meet the following conditions: (a) They have not yet finished with the Ph.D. (b) They live in Princeton or the immediate vicinity. (c) They are within five years from passing generals. Access to the library is automatic based on the students alumnus/a status. Guidelines For the Appointment of Princeton Graduate Students as Lecturers and Pre-Doctoral Research AssistantsA. Candidates for a graduate degree at Princeton may be appointed as lecturers before they have successfully sustained the Final Public Oral Examination under the following circumstances: 1. When students in good standing have completed their normal program (four or five years of study) and all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation, they may be appointed as lecturers, subject to the hiring criteria of the Office of the Dean of the Faculty for such positions.
2. When a teaching emergency exists in the department, a regularly enrolled graduate student may be permitted to withdraw from enrollment in his or her program to be appointed as lecturer for one term or, at most, one year. In such cases the circumstances must be reviewed by the dean of the Graduate School to verify that the proposed assignment is in the best interest of the student. 3. Appointment forms for unenrolled graduate student lecturers should be submitted to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty as early as possible but in no case later than the first week of classes. Revised appointment forms reflecting changes in duty time should be submitted by the beginning of the third week of the semester. B. Unenrolled degree candidates who have come to the end of their regular program (four or five years) may be appointed as pre-doctoral research assistants through the Office of the Dean of the Faculty subject to the following conditions: 1. The appointment shall normally be for one academic term beginning September or February, and at 50 percent duty time. Reappointment for one additional term is possible, but no longer. A summer appointment is allowed only when the first pre-doctoral research assistent appointment occurs in the spring term of the academic year. 2. The appointee shall have completed a first draft of the dissertation and will be expected to finish the Ph.D. within the term of appointment as a pre-doctoral research assistant. 3. The salary schedule will be the same as current post-Generals AR rates. The pre-doctoral research assistant salary is considered taxable income.
4. The appointment terminates when the student sustains the Final Public Oral Examination for the Ph.D. C. International students are generally required by law to obtain permission to work, through the International Student Adviser in the Office of Visa Services (258-1445, 120 Alexander Road), from the Immigration and Naturalization Service/J1 sponsor before beginning employment as a lecturer or as a pre-doctoral research assistant. Accordingly, departments are advised to plan their appointments well in advance when such appointments involve international students. Candidates for a Princeton graduate degree may not have primary responsibility for teaching graduate courses at Princeton, either as lecturers or as assistants in instruction, without the explicit approval of the deans of the faculty and of the Graduate School. D. In both cases described above, the students enrollment is assumed to be terminated, although the degree candidacy continues, and the student therefore ceases to be eligible for such benefits as the Student Health Plan (SHP) or graduate student housing.
E. The Office of the Dean of the Faculty should be consulted regarding the period of appointment, salary, and appropriate benefits for lecturers or pre-doctoral research assistants. The salary is considered payment for services rendered to the University and is thus considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service. The Director of Graduate Studies in consultation with the academic dean of the Office of the Graduate School should set the effective date of the students termination. |
