Supplemental Financial Assistance

Federal Loan Programs

Long-term loans, payable after departure from the Graduate School, are intended to help students maintain themselves and their legal dependents during the academic year if resources prove inadequate. Long-term loans, under the Federal Stafford Loan Program, for up to $8,500 (subsidized), up to $10,000 (unsubsidized), and up to $6,000 under the Perkins Loan Program, are available only to eligible U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Federal Work-Study Program

Federal Work-Study is a program through which eligible graduate students can work on campus during the summer and academic year to earn the difference between the annual cost of their education and their financial support, including federal loans. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens or holders of permanent resident status who show financial need (as measured by a needs analysis form) and maintain satisfactory academic progress while employed. Preference is given to those with the most need.

Contingency Loans

Short-term contingency loans are available to students coping with unexpected financial emergencies. No more than $500, they are repayable by the end of the spring term, usually through a deduction from stipend checks.

Ford Foundation Engineering Loan Program

These loans are for students pursuing a doctorate in science or engineering. Loans of up to $3,000 are forgiven on a percentage basis per year of teaching in the United States or Canada.

Employment

The Graduate School feels that outside employment may, in many cases, hinder a student’s studies and that full-time employment is incompatible with full-time graduate study. If, however, the student and the department decide that employment is manageable and necessary, the student may be employed, part time, either on or off campus, under the Federal Work-Study Program whenever possible. If a teaching or research assistantship, full or partial, is offered to the student by his or her department, it must be accepted over an off-campus job.

Medical Expenses

The Sir Hugh and Lady Taylor Memorial Fund, Ethel Palmer Morgan Fund, and President’s Funds were established to help meet the cost of medical emergencies for graduate students and their families. The Graduate School office administers the funds; students in need of such financial help should call 258-3028.
