Tips for Using the Princeton Financial Aid Application on the Web 2008-09
As a student, you may log in to the Princeton Financial Aid Application (PFAA) using your Princeton University Net ID and e-mail password. You can either provide this information to your parents so they can also use it to complete the PFAA, or you can create a separate parental user account (if you have not already done so). The latter option allows students and parents to access the PFAA separately while maintaining the confidentiality of the student's e-mail account and password. Parental accounts are valid throughout your years of enrollment. You may repeatedly save a partially completed form until you and your parents are ready to submit the application.
As a parent, you may log in to the PFAA by either using the student's Princeton University Net ID and e-mail password, or the User Name and Password created for you by the student in setting up a parental account.
It is a good idea to prepare in advance by having the following information at hand:
- Parents' 2007 tax information — adjusted gross income, federal income tax, and wage and salary figures.
- Parents' 2007 untaxed income — contributions to tax deferred savings plans, benefits such as Social Security and VA, housing allowances, and all other untaxed sources of income.
- Current value of parents' assets — savings, investments, college savings plans (529, Coverdell, etc.), real estate, and business or farm equity; excluding the family home and retirement funds.
- Student's taxable and untaxed income for 2007 — wages, interest and dividends, and untaxed benefits.
- Current value of student's assets — savings, investments, trusts, and Uniform Gifts to Minors.
- Family 2007 expenses — especially school and college costs, unreimbursed medical and dental expenses, education loan payments, and other out-of-the ordinary expenses.
The “Instructions” button on each page of the application provides more information about how to complete the questions on that page.
Parents should be aware that it is not possible to block student access to the on-line PFAA regardless of how you log in. If for some reason you do not wish the student to view your financial information, you should print the application, complete it by hand, and mail the completed form to the Undergraduate Financial Aid Office.
