Information and Departmental Plans of Study

Entrance to the Department. Students are normally encouraged to complete two courses in sociology by the end of the sophomore year, but one or both of these prerequisites may be completed after admission to the department. SOC 101 is normally a prerequisite to enter the department, but in special circumstances may be completed after the start of the junior year. In the latter case, a 200-level course must substitute for 101 as one of the sociology courses that students are normally expected to complete prior to their junior year. Freshman seminars that are taught by sociology faculty may be counted as one of the two courses needed to enter the department, but do not count toward the nine departmentals required for graduation. Prerequisites count toward the number of departmental courses required for the major except if they are freshman seminars. Students who are considering a major in sociology must not designate these courses pass/D/fail.

Early Concentration. Students should consult the section of the Undergraduate Announcement on Early Concentration (see page 36) for more information. The approval of the departmental representative is required to enter this program.

Departmental Requirements. The departmental major has been designed to provide a coherent intellectual experience that is both rigorous and responsive to diverse scholarly interests and career goals. Individual programs may be selected from a wide array of departmental or interdepartmental plans established by the department or initiated by the student.

The degree of specialization in sociological subfields varies; departmental flexibility allows students to develop their own emphases. Some students use their course work to develop a broad familiarity with different areas of sociology and then specialize through their independent work. Other students use their course work to focus on particular sociological specialties (for example, stratification and inequality, comparative sociology, culture, demography). (Seniors are encouraged to enroll in graduate courses, as their interests and the instructor’s permission dictate.)

Students are required to take a minimum of nine courses in sociology, including cognates. Many students take more than the required number. All departmental courses must be taken for a grade and cannot be taken pass/D/fail. SOC 101 is a requirement for the major. In addition, three required courses in research methods and sociological theory (300, 301, and 302) are designed to help students carry out their junior and senior independent work by exposing them to the nature of sociological problems, the logic of inquiry, the techniques of empirical investigation, and the elements of statistics. These courses are offered exclusively in the fall to facilitate students who wish to study abroad.

Majors must complete at least one course in two of the three groupings of 200-level courses prior to graduation. These groupings and associated courses are Individual and Group Behavior (200, 214, 223, 241), Social Institutions (201, URB 201/SOC 203, 221, 222, 224, 225, 227, 240), and Macro, Comparative, Historical Change (210, 245, 248, 250, 284). This condition amounts to having distribution requirements within the department. SOC 202 does not fulfill these distribution requirements, but it continues to count as a departmental. In addition to the required 300, 301, and 302 courses, majors must complete at least one additional sociology course at the 300 level or higher (including graduate courses).

Junior Independent Work. Juniors begin their independent work in the fall of their junior year, but the work is due at the end of the spring semester.

The junior paper is written under faculty supervision, with SOC 300 and 301 providing the basic research tools to formulate the project. Junior papers may require original data collection, but usually involve secondary data analysis using historical, ethnographic, or quantitative analysis. In many cases the junior paper becomes the foundation for the student’s senior thesis. All junior papers are graded by a second reader, in addition to the major adviser.

The department believes that study abroad (www.princeton.edu/~sap/guide) adds a valuable dimension to students’ academic experience as well as a possible basis for independent work in the junior and senior years. In an increasingly connected world, the department encourages its students to take advantage of the many fine programs available to them in other countries.

Senior Independent Work. Senior independent work consists of completing a thesis that (a) explores the various theoretical approaches that have been used to explain a particular social phenomenon and (b) examines that phenomenon through secondary analysis of existing data and/or primary analysis of data collected by the student. Students whose thesis topics require advanced quantitative skills may acquire the necessary competence by enrolling in suitable statistics courses. Students who are contemplating collecting their own data need the prior approval of the University’s Human Subjects Committee.

Departmental Examination. Each senior takes an oral examination based on the senior thesis and the broader subfield to which it contributes. A departmental committee conducts this examination in May.

Study Abroad. Sociology welcomes students with international interests who wish to study abroad for one or two semesters. The department makes every effort to accommodate these students by making special arrangements for advising on independent work and by permitting them to take required courses out of sequence, either before or after the period of foreign study. Normally, two courses taken during a semester or a year abroad count as departmentals. Such courses will need preapproval from the departmental representative.

Special Opportunities. Students are strongly encouraged to strengthen their research skills beyond the level required in 301. Some students will want to pursue advanced training in applied statistics, whereas others may find that additional study in qualitative research methods best meets their needs. The department’s Undergraduate Handbook lists University undergraduate and graduate course offerings that are potentially relevant. Graduating seniors who wish to extend their training in sociology through master’s or Ph.D. programs are encouraged to consult with departmental faculty and former students who are available to advise majors.

Undergraduate Departmental Committee. At the beginning of every year, an Undergraduate Student Advisory Committee is selected. This committee, consisting of equal numbers of junior and senior majors, advises the department on matters pertaining to curriculum, staffing, and requirements.

Research Facilities. The Social Science Reference Center, the Data and Statistical Services unit, and the Stokes Library provide facilities for study and research in the form of collections of books, journal articles, reports, microfilm, and electronic data. Staff members in these units are available to majors who are completing their independent work, looking for appropriate data sets to analyze, or seeking advice on where to find literature relevant to their research topics.
