Undergraduate admission to Princeton is extremely selective, as demonstrated both by the number of students applying for places in the entering class (see the table on page 9) and the qualifications of those admitted. In 2001-02, there were 3,831 candidates for the A.B. degree and 782 for the B.S.E. degree. The largest numbers of students came from New Jersey (647), New York (592), California (474), Pennsylvania (322), Maryland (213), Texas (183), and Massachusetts (184).
